World’s First 108MP Image Sensor By Samsung Now Official

Aiming to further enhance mobile photography, we know camera sensors with more than 100MP are ready to hit the tech world. After announcing its plans to launch one, Samsung officially announced the world’s first 108MP image sensor.

The new 108MP Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX has been developed by Samsung in collaboration with Chinese company Xiaomi.

108MP ISOCELL Bright HMX Sensor

The new 108MP ISOCELL Bright HMX 0.8 micrometer image sensor comes with a pixel size of 1/1.33-inch, becoming the first image sensor to sport a large size like this. The larger size will allow the sensor to absorb more light, especially in low-light shooting conditions.

The sensor makes use of the pixel-merging Tetracell technology for the production of brighter pictures at a resolution of 27MP.

The ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor comes with support for Smart ISO that changes in accordance with the environment for optimal light-to-electric signal conversion. It goes for a low ISO to produce vivid pictures and switches to a high ISO for enhanced low-light photography.

In addition to this, the sensor supports video recording at up to 6K (6016 x 3384) 30-frames-per-second (fps).

The 108MP ISOCELL Bright HMX image sensor will be in mass production later this month.

Samsung Xiaomi Partnership

The new Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX 108MP camera sensor has been introduced in partnership with Xiaomi, meaning Xiaomi’s upcoming smartphone (either a Redmi phone or the Mi Mix 4) will come with a new image sensor.

However, there is no word on which smartphone the company will launch.

To recall, Xiaomi announced a 64MP imaging technology in collaboration with Samsung. The camera tech will come with Samsung’s GW1 64MP sensor and will come with a Redmi smartphone in Quarter 4, 2019.
