The era of the folding phones is not onto its best start, at least for Samsung, as many early users are reporting broken displays in $2,000 Galaxy Fold.
Phone reviewers who got early access to the Galaxy Fold have complained that the display of the folding phone has broken or has visible bumps just after few days of usage.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman published a series of Tweets documenting how the screen broke after he peeled out the protective screen guard.
CNBC’s Steve Kovach tweeted a clip showing the one half of Galaxy Fold gone completely blank “after one day of use.”
Some of the issues are arising from what seems like a screen protector on the display of Fold. Popular Youtuber Marques Brownlee aka MKBHD said that the display “blacked out,” after he peeled off the screen protector.
After multiple complaints, Samsung has issued an official statement acknowledging the issue and saying that it will thoroughly inspect broken phones in person.
As for the apparent screen protector, the smartphone manufacturer company has advised users not to remove the protective layer as it can cause damage to the display.
“The main display on the Galaxy Fold features a top protective layer, which is part of the display structure designed to protect the screen from unintended scratches. Removing the protective layer or adding adhesives to the main display may cause damage.”
At the launch event of the Galaxy Fold, Samsung said that the foldable phone could easily withstand 200,000 fold. However, the claim seems to be bogus and not really applicable in real life.
Broken displays of the Galaxy Fold could be a matter of contention for Samsung, mainly due to its exorbitant pricing of $1,980. If the issues persist, it won’t take much time before Samsung’s innovation turns into a pain in the ass for the company.
Folding phones at the moment seem to be a luxury that needs polishing. It would not be wrong to say that we’re not yet ready for folding phones and that’s what we predicted in our video.
